Yes, I'm still alive
I guess I should post in this thing once in a while...
Update on my life: Back in Tampa. Will be here, five days a week, for the majority of August and September. Being determinedly optimistic about the whole situation. I took this job because I figured it would be a lot like college, in a fun and familiar way. Well, I was more right than I knew. Sitting in the office in the evening, somewhere around my tenth hour of work and third caffeinated beverage, shoes long since kicked under the desk, surrounded by teammates working just as hard - this has been my life for the past six years, and as much as I complained, I also loved every minute of it. And to some extent, I still do. Sometimes I think I'm only content with my life when I'm working this hard. (Oh, William & Mary, how you screwed up our brains...) But the hours and the travel are really taking a toll on the rest of my life. I'm realizing that this lifestyle corresponds to a set of priorities that I have been living by without ever really questioning them: Do well in school/work, whatever it takes; friendships, relationships, exercise, partying, sleep are all important, but can be set aside when the work really needs to get done. That always made sense to me before. But now that I'm out in the real world and making my own decisions, I'm starting to wonder: is that really what I want out of life?
Well, that was a heavy topic for this blog, but it's what's been on my mind, and maybe some of you have dealt with the same dilemma. Any advice?
On a lighter note, I did have a very fun weekend in Mystic, Connecticut. Congrats to the newlyweds, Ed and Sarah Murphy! Even if I can't possibly measure up to the coolness of their reception, which was held in an aquarium. :) We spent the weekend doing the tourist thing in Mystic, which is basically Williamsburg with boats. We went to an art festival, climbed around some really cool old ships, and I tried (unsuccessfully) to teach Ed the difference between a boat and a ship. It was much fun. I also got described as "one of the guys," which I thought was pretty cool, until I realized that it mostly just enabled the guys to have detailed discussions about their farts in front of me. Hmm...can I go back to being a girl?
Today what makes me happy is airplanes that get satellite TV. Because watching TV doesn't count as being lazy if you do it while traveling, right? :)
